DIY Camera-Ready Makeup Tips ~ Bridal Makeup Artist Susmta Patel

Bridal Makeup Artist and Studio Sush Owner Susmta Patel Provides DIY Camera-Ready Makeup Tips

Flowers, check. Dress, check. Photographer, check.
Now all you need is the perfect look for the big day. Always remember that when planning to apply your own bridal makeup, what you see in the mirror may not necessarily be what you get on film. But have no worries, Professional Bridal Makeup Artist Susmta Patel has provided tips that every bride should consider before the big day to achieve a flawless camera-ready look.

Practice Makes Perfect

Take the time to practice putting on your makeup prior to the big day and have a camera handy.  Snap away after completing the look and study the photo critically. Don’t put it to rest after one try— if you are not a professional makeup artist, experiment until you get it right!

Moisturize
The camera tends to capture oily skin. Be sure to moisturize with an oil-free moisturizer.  Let it sink in for a minute and then start applying makeup. Also, do not experiment with a brand new/newly-tested, moisturizer on your skin to avoid any surprises.

Blend and Match
Wearing a beautiful strapless gown? Room lighting may be tricky. Look hard and close, and make sure your neck and chest match your face color. Pat some powder on your chest and neck to even out your tone. Before doing so, insert paper towels securely into your dress and let it cover your neckline to avoid a powdered messy dress! Be sure to blend the foundation around your neck and hairline to avoid apparent multi-colored skin in photos. Steer clear of shimmery bronzers and blush; they do not translate well on camera.

Paint Those Lips
Natural lip color or applying sheer gloss is a no-no for the big day. Color on your lips will bring life to those still photos. Lip gloss should be applied on top of color, not substituted for lipstick.  To make your lip color last, prior to applying lipstick, line and fill in your lips with lip liner.

Touch-Up
Bridesmaids are girl’s best friends and “foundation”, in more ways than one. So pass along a wedding day touch-up kit to your favorite girl. Be sure to include the essentials—lipstick, eyeliner and powder/foundation. Have her keep it throughout the night and remind you to refresh your makeup so your photos look good— from beginning to end!

Summer is Here- Don't for get to Cover up...

Our friends over at KMR Communication are helping us out again with some great summer fun in the sun tips!

WARNING: IGNORED AREAS YOU MUST PROTECT BEFORE STEPPING OUT INTO THE SUN:

Filling your beach bag with your favorite summer skincare products puts you at ease for a day out, basking in the sun. BUT, are you really protecting your skin? The right products are only part of the process to insure proper protection from harmful summer rays. Are you covering all the bases? Sunburn does not only affect common areas—it “burns” its mark where you least expect it.

Dr.  Sandra Lee, a board certified dermatologist and member of the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery and the American Society for Mohs Surgery, put together a list of the
top six areas people tend to neglect when prepping for the sun:

6. Feet
Though perfectly manicured toes are important, sunburned feet can leave you “sole”-less. With painful sunburn on your tootsies, pairing your dress with those perfect summer heels may not be an option. Make sure to apply sunscreen to all areas of your feet to avoid any complications.

5. Back of Hands
Hydrating your hands with lotion, during your weekly manicures, is not all it takes to protect them from becoming dry. It is vital to protect your hands during the summertime, an area you may forget to tend to when stepping out into the sun.  Opt for a lotion that contains SPF 15 to 30 to protect and hydrate your hands.

4. Ears
Don’t forget to protect your ears, when applying sunscreen to your face. The skin on your ears is both sensitive and delicate, and the tops of your ears are particularly exposed to the sun’s rays. Throw on a wide-brimmed hat that is both fashionable and can help to protect your face and ears.

3. Chest/Neck
You don’t want “breases”, the vertical creases that can occur on your chest from sun damage and excess sun exposure.  The skin on your neck and chest is exposed to the same amount of sun as your face, and in order to prevent any damage, it needs just as much attention. The skin on your neck and chest is thin, so generously apply sunscreen in those two often-ignored areas. Sunburn in the chest/neck is not only painful, but unappealing when dressed in your favorite summer wardrobe.

2. Lips
Summer is not all about glossy lips. Before applying your favorite lip gloss, be sure to apply lipstick containing SPF 15 or above to protect the lips. Slip the lipstick in your bag and apply regularly throughout the day to avoid sun damage.

1. Scalp
As the sun beams down over your head, it is an important to note the #1 overlooked area that requires protection from the sun—your scalp. Have you ever ended up leaving the beach and feeling like your head was on fire? Since you don’t want to pile on sunscreen over your hair and a hat may not be your favorite option, grab your favorite scarf and tie it around your head like a bandanna. Another option would be to use a sunscreen spray and spray it on your fingertips and use your fingers to apply this liquid to your part in your hair, the area of your scalp most susceptible to sunburn.

Hope these tips help you enjoy the sun and have fun!

Glowing Skin for Your Big Day - 4 Big No...No's!

Our friends over at KMR Communications have provided us with a great list on what to avoid when it comes to your skin care the week of your wedding, check it out!

All brides want flawless and glowing skin on their wedding day. But in an effort to look and feel especially beautiful, soon-to-be brides often splurge on beauty treatments that they haven't done before, says Mike Sendogan, Clinical Director of LaserTouch Aesthetics, a luxury medspa in SoHo and Midtown Manhattan. Any beauty treatment that you're trying for the first time should be done a minimum of two weeks before your wedding day to give any unexpected reactions or irritations time to fade.

According to LaserTouch Aesthetics, below are four wedding-week DON’TS:

1.Botox
Botox takes four to five days to kick in, and you wouldn't want to discover one day before the wedding that a brow has dropped or elevated unattractively.

2.Chemical Peels
This type of facial is designed to dissolve dead skin cells and reveal brighter skin. It also helps erase fine lines and lighten dark blotches for a more even-toned complexion. Do this at least two weeks before your wedding day because even a gentle chemical peel can cause drying that may be annoying to apply makeup over.

3.Fillers

Lip plumping is popular with brides, but filler in the lips can look swollen initially—which is not very photogenic. All fillers can also cause bruising that may last up to two weeks, so be sure to give yourself time to heal.

4.Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion, which uses a machine to buff skin, is also a commonly sought-after pre wedding beauty treatment. Mike suggests not going the week before your wedding day because side effects may include redness, sensitivity, and breakouts. Avoid that stress by consulting with a professional three months before your wedding day to come up with a personalized routine.

Click here for their blog, or visit them on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

So, take the advice ladies! Don't do ANYTHING drastic before your big day...Guys, this goes for you too!!

The Summer Sun and Your Skin

Ok, we all know I (Denice) avoid sun exposure. I do not tan like Katie and Cindy, I BURN! Thus... I just avoid it. If I need color, I have found that the alternatives work best for me (Mystic tanning). BUT, I am very strict in wearing my sunscreen, even though I don't plan on baking. I wear it daily to protect myself from the harmful rays of the sun. I have been using Neutragina, but have found it leaves my skin oily.

In my quest to find something better to protect my skin, an interesting email popped into my inbox form my pals over at KMR Communication, regarding Sothys and their Sun Care line. Although I have not tried the Sothys products, it did intrigue me. So, I am sharing it with you for your thoughts and opinions, here we go:

Legendary French skincare company, Sothys, has recognized the sun’s importance in daily life and as a result has created a range of sun care products designed to maximize your summer fun without fear of skin damage. Sothys believes the benefits of sun exposure, including mood enhancement and Vitamin D production, can be capitalized on safely if you choose the correct product to protect your skin.

Under the Cellu-Guard® line, Sothys has created products with sun protection factors ranging from SPF 8 to SPF 30 as well as a soothing lotion for after-sun care.
Sun Sensitive Areas Care with SPF 30: A care that protects from free radicals and photo-aging during intense sunlight exposure. Hypoallergenic and fragrance-free, it is particularly suitable for sensitive skin Price: $40 (1.7 fl. oz.)

Iridescent Tanning Gel with SPF 8: A protective tanning gel containing tan boosting active ingredients to help intensify and accelerate a natural-looking tan. Price: $44 (5 fl. oz.)

Tanning Body Lotion with SPF 20: A soft, light and milky formula for a pleasant tan and ultra-effective protection. Perfect for all day and suitable for face and body application, it is water-resistant, sweat-resistant. Price: $52 (5 fl. oz.)

Soothing After-Sun Body Care: A refreshing fluid which softens the skin immediately after exposure with soothing active ingredients. Through its care actives, it prevents photo-induced aging, and hydrate* the skin to restore it to its full radiance. Price: $40 (5 fl. oz.)
A little history on Sothys:
In 1946, Sothys was a beauty institute in Paris, where a list of exclusive customers enjoyed fine French products created by Dr. Hotz, a medical biologist. Sothys was acquired by the Mas family in 1966 and chairman Bernard Mas decided to add to the beautiful Sothys range and increase its availability. By 1970 Sothys had entered the United States market under the direction of esthetician Christian Garces. Sothys became an instant hit for estheticians looking for a professional, results- oriented product line.

Over two decades later, it continues to be the forerunner in an extremely demanding industry. Much of Sothys' success is due to its focus on education. Not content to simply sell its products, Sothys offers continuous, complementary education to estheticians and therapists who want to learn not just about the products, but about the industry in general. At the Sothys Institute in Miami, and at regional Sothys offices across the Nation, classes are offered, with topics ranging from hands-on body workshops to cosmetic chemistry.

To Tan or Not To Tan?

I was in a wedding this past May. All of you who know me, know that I am almost see through I am so white.  I avoid the sun at all cost, and when I am in it, I am usually coated in 30+ sunscreen.  So, knowing that I had to wear a strapless dress, that was bright shamrock green, I was NERVOUS!!!

I began researching different tanning methods.  Self tanner...No, Tanning Beds...No, Airbrushed Tan...Maybe, Mystic Spray Tan...Maybe, and last but not least, the Instant Spray Self-Tanners...Maybe.

I tried the spray yourself tanner and let me tell you, it was hilarious!  I was so orange and streaky.  It was not going to work.  Then I looked in to the professional Air Brushed Tan.  Man, is that EXPENSIVE!!! Maybe it would be ok, if I was not on such a strict budget, sooooo on to the next choice please...

That only left me the Mystic Tan.  I found one place local to my home and called for an appointment.  They were able to take me right away.  I went the Wednesday before the wedding. Yes, I know, I should have done a trial run before hand, but I was out of time!  I figured that if I went Wednesday, I would have plenty of time to scrub it off, need be.

I was so surprised, it was not too bad at all. I got to the place, paid my $40 (that was for 3 sessions), and the nice girl (not a creepy guy) walked me through it.  I stepped in the booth, applied my lotion to the necessary places, took a deep breath, stood like a scare crow and pressed the button.  15 seconds sure is a long time when you are holding your breath! I repeated for the back side, got out, blotted and was on my way.
The after photo is 3 days after getting the tan

I was very surprised at how natural my tan was.  In no way did I feel like I looked orange (except in a few areas...my toes and hands).  I had SO many compliments (and a few jokes) on my new tan.  I guess people are just not used to seeing me with color.  I will DEFINITELY be using Mystic Tan again.  It was reasonable, and worked great. Check it out!

This is the day after getting the tan

What Summer Drinks Are Doing to Your Teeth!

Your health is important, and beautiful, healthy teeth are even more important come your big day!  Our friends over at KMR Communications sent us this very informative post on  "What summer drinks are doing to your teeth" from New York City Cosmetic Dentist, Dr. Michael Entin.

The warm weather of summer leads to plenty of barbecues, outdoor brunches and rooftop parties. With so many social engagements to juggle, one of the last things people might think about is their teeth. The truth is increased consumption of alcohol, soft drinks and coffees can often lead to staining, cavities, plaque buildup and bad breath – something no one wants to deal with while enjoying summer days and nights!

According to Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Michael Entin, “many of my patients come to me at the end of a long summer with more than one problem that could be caused by the different types of beverages they are indulging in.” Dr. Entin lists his “top offenders” below and different ways to keep your teeth bright, healthy and white this summer:

Alcohol
~ Alcohol consumption can cause digestive problems which leads to bad breath. In addition, alcohol dries out the mouth, which reduces saliva production.
~ Water will help thwart the dehydration effect of alcohol. Order one glass of water for every drink and you’ll stay sober and sweet!
~ Mojitos contain lots of fresh mint, so order one and ask for an extra mint garnish to chew on after you finish your drink.

Sugar
~ Every year, Americans drink almost 50 billion gallons of soda. Sugars and acids in sodas can dissolve away the healthy enamel in teeth, leading to decay and tooth loss
~ Teenagers are get almost 40% of their sugar from soft drinks
~ Frozen beverages like margaritas and pina coladas are loaded with sugar. Dr. Entin suggests drinking these types of beverages in moderation or asking for your margarita “on the rocks” with simple tequila, lime juice and other low-sugar mixers

Stains
~ Certain drinks like coffee, tea, red wine and soda all can stain or discolor the teeth
~ Dr. Entin notes behavior modification like drinking through a straw, limiting your coffee or tea consumption and avoiding red wine are often the best options
~ Brush using whitening toothpaste to remove daily stains and help them from building up over time. If you have existing stains, you might consider whitening treatments either with your dentist or over the counter

About Dr. Michael Entin, DDS
Dr. Michael Entin, DDS is a graduate of The New York University College of Dentistry, class of 2000. As of 2001 he has been in private practice in New York City. Eyebrow Threading...Yup, I'm Addicted!

I recently had lunch with my cousin and her new baby girl.  We met at the beautiful Victoria Gardens Mall and enjoyed a great lunch, accompanied by great conversation.  Yes, the children were with us, so it was not a peaceful, quiet lunch, it was a little more exciting (thank you Cooper).
After lunch we took a stroll around the Mall.  It is so beautiful there, I recommend checking it out if you have not.  While walking around, we came upon Ziba Beauty. What is Ziba Beauty you say? Well, let me tell you, it is my new FAVORITE place. They do Eyebrow Threading, and other beauty treatments.

I was a little intimidated when I walked in.  I had never heard of Eyebrow Threading, nor had I ever seen it in action.  I was a little...ok, a lot, nervous about of having it done.  My cousin encouraged me to try it, so I caved, but I had her go first.  I watched and I was amazed at how the lady was doing it.  It was WEIRD!

The lady held a string(s) in her mouth and moved around the brow area.  How she did not thread the whole eyebrow off is beyond me! The whole process took less than 5 minutes.  I was up...YIKES! I sat in the chair and the lady went to town on my ungroomed brows (yes, they had been neglected for quit some time).  By the time she was finished (a little more than 5 minutes on me), I was not teary eyed at all.  I thought for sure it would hurt, but I was surprised that it did not. It did feel weird, but not painful.

My brows looked AMAZING!!!  I have had so many people ask me what I have done differently with my make up...I laugh.  There is nothing different, you can just see my eyes now because my brows have been tamed!

I recommend checking out Ziba Beauty.  They are fabulous, and not expensive at all.  My brows were about $11 (plus a small tip).  They also sell skin care product, do make up application, Bridal services and Mehndi tattoo's.  According to the Victoria Gardens web site description:

Ziba Beauty Center
Ziba Beauty is the respected leader in ancient beauty techniques. This includes The Art of Threading, a non-invasive, ancient hair removal technique used primarily for brow shaping with the use of cotton thread, The Art of Mehndi, a traditional art form using natural henna to give the body a temporary tattoo effect and many other beauty secrets.

Ziba Beauty has locations all though out Southern California...Do it, check them out, you will not be sorry.  I'm going back...SOON!  Click here to see some youtube videos to see how they do Eyebrow Threading. Have fun!

Let me know if you try it or have tried it and what your thoughts are.

Hair Do or Don't?

Your wedding day is quickly approaching, how are you going to do your hair? You want to look glamorous, but not too over done. You want something that will stand the tests and trials of the day (all the hugs, kisses, and poses). There are no re-do's here, this is your BIG day and you only get one shot at it, so make sure you keep reading to get it RIGHT!

I received a great interview from my friends over at KMR Communications, Inc., so let me introduce you to Latrice Strader, master hair stylist & owner of Washington D.C. based salon and spa, Destiny De’ve. She knows all to well how stressful an up do appointment can be, and offers a few simple tips to make sure your up do’s don’t turn into do up don’ts!

* Down and Dirty: There is some prep work that you should be aware of before getting your up do. You may want to be fresh and clean when you go to the salon, but try to resist the urge to wash your hair the day of your up do. “Hair that’s a day or two old is easier to work with,” says Latrice. “When hair is too soft, it doesn’t hold curls or tease as well.” When planning for a glam hair style, forget the rule “lather, rinse and repeat!”
* Avoid a Wardrobe Malfunction: Wear a button-up shirt or a top with a loose fitting neck when you go in for your appointment. There’s nothing worse than trying to maneuver out of a small neck hole while keeping your tresses in tact! “Some women are so distracted with everything else on their mind that they don’t think about the shirt they are putting on over their head the morning of an up do,” says Latrice. Stick with an easily escapable top, or you might end up having to cut yourself out of one of your favorite blouses!

* Think Total Package: Make sure you consider your entire look when selecting an up do. Although choosing a hairstyle based on your face shape or hair-type are both effective techniques, don’t forget to factor in what you will be wearing for that special occasion. Think about the top of your dress and what would flatter it the most. “Strapless gowns generally look nice with some romantic waves or loose curls hanging down, whereas dresses with busy tops would look the best paired with a French twist or sleek pompadour ponytail,” advises Latrice. Do a run-through by fixing your own hair as close to how you want it as you can, along with trying on your complete ensemble (shoes, bag, jewelry, the works), to see the whole picture. You may discover everything doesn’t fit together quite like it does in your head, and you’ll want to be able to rethink things ahead of time.

* Don’t be afraid of hair accessories: Never underestimate the power of a well-placed accessory. If you see a piece in a store or magazine that attracts you, ask your stylist if it can be incorporated into your up do. Again, think total package. “If the rest of your look is simple, playing up your face with a stunning flower or sophisticated headband can add some high drama to your look,” says Latrice. But just don’t go overboard. You want one show piece that’s going to stand out, so don’t do this if you already plan on wearing an elaborate dress, necklace or other attention-grabbing piece. Simplicity is the key here.

* Inject some personality: You should still look like yourself (albeit an even more devastatingly beautiful version of yourself) for your special occasion, so try to incorporate some of your own personal style. “If you always wear your hair down, maybe try an up do with a part that has some face-framing locks falling down,” Latrice says. “This way it’s similar to your typical look, but with some added glamour.” You will have pictures from this event for the rest of your life, so you probably want to be able to recognize yourself in them. Not only is it important to look like you, but also if you have an up do that fits your personality, you’re more likely to feel beautiful, and therefore more likely to work it!

* Honesty is the best policy: If you are not 100% happy with your up do, don’t keep it a secret from your stylist (chances are he/she can tell just by looking at your face). Let them know how you really feel so they can make changes before it’s too late! “You may not want to sound rude or demanding, but your stylist would rather know if things aren’t looking like you imagined,” says Latrice. “They will be able to adjust the up do for you better in the salon than you will be able to do yourself at home.” That being said, keep in mind up dos are works in progress, and may look a little crazy at some points. Feel free to ask questions if something concerns you, but remember that an up do generally doesn’t look chic and polished until the very end, when the final spritzing and smoothing is administered.

Big Day? Be Sure Your Hair Looks Great!

I recently received a new flat iron to try out from Prosilk. I am not much of a flat iron kind of gal. Don't get me wrong, I have used one in the past, but it is not something I use everyday. So testing this new ProSilk Gold Flat Iron was a little bit of a challenge for me...I had to remember to use it!

Well, I tried out the flat iron for a week, and I have to say, It made a real difference in my hair. It made it less frizzy and added more of a shine. It was easy to use. It heated up quickly and did not leave my hair looking over processed.

Here is the run down on the ProSilk Gold Flat Iron:
(1) Heats up in 7 seconds
(2) Automatic sensor control system
(3) Preserves moisture and shine to give smooth silky hair and provides volume
(4) Eliminates damaging hot spots
(5) 9 ft swivel power cord
(6) Scratch free plate
(7) Easy to clean inhibits bacteria and odor build up
(8) Light weight, Slim, Easy to handle
(9) Instantly heats up to 435F(225C)
(10) Ionic Plate

The ProSilk site does not offer much in product description, but I did some researching on the Internet and found a wealth of information on this site: lastheplace.com. I currently have a ProSilk hair dryer that I have been using for the past few years, and I love it, so I knew I would like the flat iron. ProSilks ionic technology helps lock in moisture and shine so my hair looks really healthy.

I totally recommend checking this out if you are in the market for a new flat iron. It is not to bad on the price either, at $79.95, it's attainable! I am passing this flat iron along to my sister to try, so look for more info on this!

Healthy Find!

While browsing our Twitter Followers, I stumbled upon a great find: http://www.healthy-bride.com/ .

This site is fabulous for many reasons:
1) They are encouraging Brides to be HEALTHY!!
2) Fitness success stories
3) There is a team of qualified experts
4) A Health Bride Blog
AND
5) A Bridal Fitness page with different workouts and programs

The reason this is so amazing is that in today's world, people are so quick to take the "easy route" that they tend to do it the unhealthy way. I think it is great that there are support systems out there that are willing to help you do it the "right" way!

So, cruise on over and check it out: www.healthy-bride.com!

A Wedding Means Exercise!

Ok, you all know what I am talking about. Your friend or family member ask you to be in their wedding, and all of a sudden, you look like a deer in the headlights...HUH??? Yup, we all do it. We immediately think, "I need to go on a diet and lose weight before this wedding!"

I have a confession...I am currently in this state of mind! My sister in law is getting married in the spring of 2010, and I am desperately trying to get rid of my recently pregnant body! In my search for the perfect diet, easiest exercise plan, best slimming undergarments, I located this interesting web site; FitnessYouWear.com also know as BANGLZ.com.

FitnessYouWear.com was created in 2007 by two stay at home moms (Annie Ilichney and Kimberly Koelle) who were looking for a way to get and stay in shape, amidst their busy schedules. Thus, the idea of fashionable weighted bracelets was born.

FitnessYouWear.com offers the most fashionable exercise equipment yet! They offer two, unique fashion accessories to any woman's wardrobe. One you see and one you don't. Here is how the they describe their products:

BANGLZ are comfortable, weighted bracelets and anklets worn like jewelry all throughout the day. Banglz add a slight resistance to convert your daily routines into daily exercise OR to maximize your exercise time or low-impact workout.

The SMARTSLIP is the exercise superslip that works you out and has an ultra-slim fit all at once! The resistance in this amazing fabric targets the hips, glutes and legs while you walk and move during the day, giving you a lower body workout with each step.

"BANGLZ and SMARTSLIPS are wearable workouts that integrate exercise throughout your usual day."

Sign me up, I am ordering mine today! Hopefully it will aid me in my weight loss journey to my sister in laws wedding!

Oh ya...I one more thing I would like to mention; right now, FitnessYouWear.com is offering one lucky KDC Events reader a free pair of Banglz Wrist Weights!!

Just leave a comment as to how these fashionable weighted bracelets would help aid YOU in your fitness journey. We will choose one luck reader on OCTOBER 31.

Good luck and Have fun! We are looking forward to your responses.
