Hair Do or Don't?

Your wedding day is quickly approaching, how are you going to do your hair? You want to look glamorous, but not too over done. You want something that will stand the tests and trials of the day (all the hugs, kisses, and poses). There are no re-do's here, this is your BIG day and you only get one shot at it, so make sure you keep reading to get it RIGHT!

I received a great interview from my friends over at KMR Communications, Inc., so let me introduce you to Latrice Strader, master hair stylist & owner of Washington D.C. based salon and spa, Destiny De’ve. She knows all to well how stressful an up do appointment can be, and offers a few simple tips to make sure your up do’s don’t turn into do up don’ts!

* Down and Dirty: There is some prep work that you should be aware of before getting your up do. You may want to be fresh and clean when you go to the salon, but try to resist the urge to wash your hair the day of your up do. “Hair that’s a day or two old is easier to work with,” says Latrice. “When hair is too soft, it doesn’t hold curls or tease as well.” When planning for a glam hair style, forget the rule “lather, rinse and repeat!”

* Avoid a Wardrobe Malfunction: Wear a button-up shirt or a top with a loose fitting neck when you go in for your appointment. There’s nothing worse than trying to maneuver out of a small neck hole while keeping your tresses in tact! “Some women are so distracted with everything else on their mind that they don’t think about the shirt they are putting on over their head the morning of an up do,” says Latrice. Stick with an easily escapable top, or you might end up having to cut yourself out of one of your favorite blouses!

* Think Total Package: Make sure you consider your entire look when selecting an up do. Although choosing a hairstyle based on your face shape or hair-type are both effective techniques, don’t forget to factor in what you will be wearing for that special occasion. Think about the top of your dress and what would flatter it the most. “Strapless gowns generally look nice with some romantic waves or loose curls hanging down, whereas dresses with busy tops would look the best paired with a French twist or sleek pompadour ponytail,” advises Latrice. Do a run-through by fixing your own hair as close to how you want it as you can, along with trying on your complete ensemble (shoes, bag, jewelry, the works), to see the whole picture. You may discover everything doesn’t fit together quite like it does in your head, and you’ll want to be able to rethink things ahead of time.

* Don’t be afraid of hair accessories: Never underestimate the power of a well-placed accessory. If you see a piece in a store or magazine that attracts you, ask your stylist if it can be incorporated into your up do. Again, think total package. “If the rest of your look is simple, playing up your face with a stunning flower or sophisticated headband can add some high drama to your look,” says Latrice. But just don’t go overboard. You want one show piece that’s going to stand out, so don’t do this if you already plan on wearing an elaborate dress, necklace or other attention-grabbing piece. Simplicity is the key here.

* Inject some personality: You should still look like yourself (albeit an even more devastatingly beautiful version of yourself) for your special occasion, so try to incorporate some of your own personal style. “If you always wear your hair down, maybe try an up do with a part that has some face-framing locks falling down,” Latrice says. “This way it’s similar to your typical look, but with some added glamour.” You will have pictures from this event for the rest of your life, so you probably want to be able to recognize yourself in them. Not only is it important to look like you, but also if you have an up do that fits your personality, you’re more likely to feel beautiful, and therefore more likely to work it!

* Honesty is the best policy: If you are not 100% happy with your up do, don’t keep it a secret from your stylist (chances are he/she can tell just by looking at your face). Let them know how you really feel so they can make changes before it’s too late! “You may not want to sound rude or demanding, but your stylist would rather know if things aren’t looking like you imagined,” says Latrice. “They will be able to adjust the up do for you better in the salon than you will be able to do yourself at home.” That being said, keep in mind up dos are works in progress, and may look a little crazy at some points. Feel free to ask questions if something concerns you, but remember that an up do generally doesn’t look chic and polished until the very end, when the final spritzing and smoothing is administered.

Martini Theme Reception

Hello Everyone!

I know, it's been a long time. I forgot how much work was involved in having a baby...and then I had to learn to juggle taking care of my 6 year old, hubby, house and work! Needless to say, I am starting to get the hang of it!

Now on to weddings!

My sister in law is getting married in the Spring and she wants to have a Martini Themed Wedding Reception! SOOOOO, I am looking for ideas! You name it; centerpiece, flowers, giveaways, decorations, signature drink, etc. We need it all.

Toppers With Glitz!

While browsing the internet for the latest trends and super chic finds (all events related of course), I located this fabulous company called Toppers with Glitz. What is a Topper with Glitz? Well, it is a cake topper, but not your ordinary bride and groom cake topper…these toppers come with bling, or as the owner, Sari Watkins, would say…GLITZ!

I had the opportunity to chat with Sari recently about her fabulous cake toppers. Here is a bit of our chat:

Denice: What was your inspiration for taking on Toppers with Glitz?
Sari: Finding something that you're both passionate about, and that you can make a living from, is rare. When I found it, I didn't let it go. Making the toppers suits my personality to a "T". It is tedious work and each one adds a challenge like to putting a puzzle together - I love it!

D: What is the philosophy behind Toppers with Glitz?
S: Quality, quality, quality! From the materials used to the craftsmanship in my work, my products are top of the line. And not just materials -- customer service is a phrase heard all too often these days that is rarely backed with integrity. As a consumer myself I know how frustrating this can be and vow to be different.

D: Can you tell me about a cake topper that you especially enjoyed creating?
S: I am a sucker for romance and love when there is a story behind the design of one of my toppers. Some might find a handcuff chained to an apple an odd choice for a cake topper but if you were a teacher marrying a police officer the topper becomes a personalized symbol of the bride and groom. It's always fun to be part of something clever and creative and to give these brides opportunities that will set their day apart.

D: Do you have any suggestions on ways to preserve and display the monogrammed letters after the big day?
S: The greatest ideas are always from the brides themselves and I have a "Keepsakes" page on my website which is a collection of the best I've heard. Personally, I love the holiday season so using the monogram as a Christmas tree ornament is my favorite!

D: I read in your website that each topper is created by you. Do youfind that this becomes very demanding on your time?
S: The wedding industry is somewhat unique in that you become responsible for a day that someone will remember for the rest of their life. Once I commit to being a part of that, it's not something I take lightly. Summer vacations are a thing of the past so instead I take some time off at the end of the year -- It's a small trade off for doing something I love. Now I just have to figure out how I'm going to fit in starting a family :)

D: Does the design of the cake influence the creation of the topper?
S: This very much depends on the bride. For some brides the topper is the most important piece, and the cake is designed to match it. For others,the cake is to be the focus, and the topper is designed as an accent. Still other brides channel their inner designer and are able to tell meand their baker exactly what they envision. In any situation I'm always interested in hearing about the design of the cake. I love seeing what bakers can do -- to me; a well decorated cake is a more impressive piece of art than a Picasso!

Wedding Question Wednesday- Bridesmaid Gifts

Today's questions: "What type of gift, if any should I get my bridesmaids?"

This is a fabulous question! YES, you should get your bridesmaids gifts. They are spending quite a bit of money to participate in your big day. It does not have to be an expensive gift by any means, just something that says, "Thanks for being in my wedding and for being a great friend."

We all know how brides can be the closer it gets to there wedding, and our friends are great at acting like we are still the nice, sweet, girl who has been their friend for years, when in actuality they become nasty bridezillas!

So your bridesmaids deserve your thanks and appreciation. Here are a few ideas that are nice:

- Shoes! If you want them all to match for the wedding, you can buy them.
- Jewelry set for the wedding day (try House of Raquel)
- Nice slippers
- Gift certificate for a manicure or pedicure
- Make up (like Bobbi Browns Beautiful Bride Kit)

These are just a few ideas I thought I would like if I were a bridesmaid.

Wedding Question Wednesday - Must read book!

We are question-less this Wednesday! But have no fear, I have a great find for you!

As I was thumbing through the recent People Magazine, I came across a small article on a book called, "The Wedding Book" by Mindy Weiss. Wendy is a favorite with stars such as Eva Longoria-Parker and Heidi Klum.

The book gives tips on making your event unique, letting your finance have some fun, test driving your footwear and remembering that you can't please everyone.

So, if you're stuck and not sure what to do with your special day, I suggest checking out Mindy's web site and book (I sure am!). It is a one-stop-shop for all event related questions. Her blog is fantastic, and her store offers the cutest event must haves!

Wedding Question Wednesday- Wedding Favors

Today's question comes from a random discussion amongst co-workers at my day job, PlasticSurgery.com. We were discussing wedding party favors. One lady asked, "is it necessary to have a favor for each guest and if so what should it be?"

This is a fabulous question! The gals of KDC Events feel that YES, it is respectful to give your guest a parting favor from your big day. Your guests spend a lot of money attending your wedding; it is nice to show them you appreciate it. We strongly feel that the favor should be one of two things:

1) Something reusable (and we don't mean a champagne glass with your name on it or bubbles). We mean something tangible! Maybe a wine stopper, candle or mini frame.

We recently tried these fabulous candles from Travertine Spa. They are Bergamot Soy Wax Candles, and they smell fantastic! It is a fragrance of fresh bergamot blended with citrus, for a soft scent. Each candle is adorned with a band of light-enhancing prisms that are beautiful and chic!


They look very elegant and would go in almost any home decor...after the wedding. You could also use them as wedding shower gifts, or gifts for your wedding party. You can purchase these directly from Travertine Spa.

2) Something edible! If the guest can eat it, the happier they are! Couples are getting very creative with this one. We have seen the traditional Hershey Kiss filled bag, and Jordan Almonds all they way to a custom candy bar catered to the bride and grooms favorite sweets.

So YES, wedding favors are necessary! Get creative and show your guests some love!

My Cousin's Wedding

I attended my cousin David's wedding on Saturday. It was beautiful. His Bride thought of everything, down to the detail. I thought I would share my two favorite things from the wedding (of course they are decorating related).

First, I absolutely loved they way they displayed the table cards! It was done so elegantly. They had some branches that they painted and put in a huge vase. They hung the cards from the branches like tree decorations! Super cute! Here is a picture:

The second thing I thought was totally awesome was the candy bar. This is what they had as their give away. The color theme from the wedding was Tiffany blue with campaign and black, and they found candy to match! They took many huge vases again and decorated them with ribbon and filled them to the brim with CANDY!!! There were baggies and scoops to help your self. They had everything from Tiffany blue rock candy to sugar rolled marshmallows. SUPER CUTE! Here is a pic:

Over all, the entire wedding was great! Just thought I would share these two different, but elegant ideas!

A Valentine Wedding Favor

I am a huge fan of wine (as all my friends know), so when I came across this fabulous wine stopper I had to post something on it!

This is the perfect wedding favor for those Valentine Nuptials! Or for those of us who have been married for years, a nice Valentine day gift.
